In the heart of Hanoi, nestled in the vibrant embrace of the Xanh Xanh Urban Forest, an unprecedented plant was born: Monstera Vietciosa. The name is a combination of “Viet Nam” (Vietnam) and “deliciosa”, expressing our pride in our Vietnamese origins and our desire to bring high-quality products.

The plant originated as an Ethyl methanesulfonate-induced, whole-plant mutation of an unnamed Monstera deliciosa plant. In the spring of 2019, meristematic tissue culture propagation of this Monstera deliciosa plant began in a plant tissue culture laboratory in Hanoi, Vietnam.

After five months in culture, the plant tissue was transferred to an agar medium to induce multiplication. One month later, the plant tissue was treated with Ethyl methanesulfonate to induce mutation. Once the cultures developed juvenile leaf shoots and calluses, they were transferred to a soilless growing media and acclimatized in a greenhouse.

This process resulted in approximately 5000 rooted young plants. After isolating and evaluating plants exhibiting variation in leaf color, shape, or variegation, one plant was observed in February 2020 to have unique foliage variegation. This plant was isolated and further evaluated to confirm its characteristics, and in January 2022, it was determined that the unique foliage variegation and coloration of the claimed plant would be favorable for commercial marketability.

The Monstera Vietciosa features deep green leaves with silver patterns, reflecting the lush landscapes and shimmering waters of the Truong Sa Islands. Its lamina exhibits two distinct colorations, dependent on ambient temperature at the time of leaf emergence. At temperatures below or near 30°C, the foliage is dark green, irregularly flecked, and blotched with white and green-white, while at temperatures above or near 35°C, the foliage is a lighter shade of green, irregularly flecked, and blotched with yellow-green.

Notably, Monstera Vietciosa has distinguishing characteristics compared to other Monstera deliciosa varieties such as ‘Thai Constellation.’ It is taller, has varying petiole coloration, cordate lamina shape with a distinct length-to-width ratio, more deeply incised leaf incisions, and unique foliar color patterns that change based on light exposure during leaf emergence.

Though typically producing a spathe and spadix inflorescence, no flowering of the claimed plant has been observed to date.
